On the weekend of October 31-November 2, four Gustavus students traveled to Washington University in St. Louis, where they presented the results of their summer research at the annual meeting of the Midstates Consortium for Math and Science. The meeting was attended by about 80 students and faculty members from the twelve member institutions in the consortium. These include Gustavus, Macalester and St. Olaf from Minnesota, Beloit, Carthage and Lawrence from Wisconsin, Grinnell and Luther from Iowa, Hope from Michigan, Augustana, Knox and the University of Chicago from Illinois, Washington University from Missouri and Colorado College. Gustavus physics majors Brad Abell (’10) and  Dan Mellema (’11) gave an oral presentation entitled “Non-Contact Modal Excitation of Microcantilevers Using Ultrasonic Radiation Forces” describing their research with Dr. Tom Huber in the physics department. Chenyu Yang (’11) presented a poster entitled “Construction of a Low-Coherence Optical Reflectometer” on his reserach with Dr. Steve Mellema in the physics department. Ryan Espy (’09) presented a poster entitled “Photolytic Degradation of Imazethapyr in the Environment” on his work with Dr. Amanda Nienow in the chemistry department.
