Since 2004 Gustavus has hosted a chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society. Founded in 1921, Sigma Pi Sigma is a member of the American Institute of Physics and a member honor society of the Association of College Honor Societies. Nomination and election are by the faculty, based upon student achievement in course work and research as well as participation in departmental and SPS activities. Over the past six years, 40 Gustavus physics majors have been elected to membership.
